AACN Offers Free Access to Adolescent SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment

April 19, 2017

With funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, NORC at the University of Chicago is working with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Council on Social Work Education, the Center for Clinical Social Work and their technology partner Kognito to disseminate adolescent screening, brief intervention , and referral to treatment (SBIRT) curriculum in nursing, social work, and inter-professional education programs.

This opportunity is open to Nurse Preceptors at placement sites of Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral Nursing education programs. Nurse Preceptors will learn how to administer SBIRT with adolescents for use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Participants receive free, unlimited access to Kognito’s SBI with Adolescents simulation through 9/30/17, access to free adolescent SBIRT resources, and free continuing education credits (CEs) with a certificate of completion. These are the requirements for Participation:

  • ·         Serve as a Nurse Preceptor at a placement site for a Nursing or Social Work education program (Bachelor’s/Master’s/Doctoral)
  • ·         Complete the online application.
  • ·         Complete Kognito’s SBI with Adolescents simulation program
  • ·         Complete a brief follow-up survey
  • Free access to Adolescent SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment)curriculum, resources, and continuing education credits to nurse preceptors at placement sites of bachelor's, master's or doctoral programs. This resource is only available until September 30 with limited space. Complete the online application and access the free training and continuing education credits. Space is limited.
 

May 19, 2017 Buprenorphine Waiver Training Program Denver Health

Please join me for a live buprenorphine waiver training course on Friday, May 19th at the Rita Bass Trauma & EMS Education Institute at Denver Health.  MDs, NPs and PAs are welcome, and this training will count as the first 8 of the required 24 hours needed for NPs and PAs to obtain a waiver.  No pre-work is required!  This live course normally costs $200 but thanks to the sponsorship of the IT MATTTRS grant and Denver Health, this fee is being waived and is entirely free.  Hope to see you there!

Colorado Nurse Elected to Board of Leading National Nursing Association

The National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) announced that Sean M. Reed, PhD, APN, ACNS-BC, ACHPN, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine and College of Nursing, Aurora, Colo. has been elected Secretary-Treasurer of the 2017-2018 NACNS Board of Directors. Reed has been a member of NACNS since 2014.  

This is the first time NACNS has combined the Secretary and Treasurer roles. Reed will serve in the position for two years.

I’m excited to serve as the association’s first secretary and treasurer during this transitional time in health care,” said Reed. “As our health care systems continue to evolve, the clinical nurse specialist is well positioned and uniquely qualified to transform the delivery of care for patients, populations, and settings.”   

We’re pleased to welcome Sean to the board and look forward to hearing a fresh perspective as the association pursuethe necessary legislative, regulatory and educational paths to strengthen the CNS role,” said NACNS Executive Director Melinda Mercer Ray, MSN, RN.

Reed is a board certified adult health and palliative care clinical nurse specialist. He teaches in the Palliative Care Certificate Program at the University of Colorado, College of Nursing and Masters of Science in Palliative Care for the School of Medicine. Reed is also an incoming palliative care and aging research fellow (T32) at the University of Colorado.

In addition to NACNS, Reed is a member of the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association and the Palliative Care Research Cooperative Group.

Reed received the Pathfinder Award in 2016 from the University of Colorado, College of Nursing Alumni and was a finalist in 2009 and 2010 for the Denver Business Journal’s Champion in Healthcare Award. Reed has been a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing, since 2005.

In 2011, Reed earned his PhD from the University of Colorado, College of Nursing in Aurora and his MS as an Adult Health CNS in 2005.  He received his BS from University of Colorado, School of Nursing in Denver, in 2004.

The 24 waiver training for buprenorphine is NOW AVAILABLE and the SAMHSA waiver application is NOW FIXED (thanks in large part to Jose!!), so we need to spread this information out to our organizations!!
