MammaCare® Breast Exam Certification Now in Denver

Posted: August 17, 2017

The MammaCare Foundation is proud to offer training and certification to Colorado nurses at the University of Colorado School of Nursing Anschutz Medical Campus starting Fall 2017. The MammaCare Method® is the recognized standard for performing and teaching clinical and personal breast examination. Thousands of advanced practice nurses have successfully completed the MammaCare certification programs, previously available only at the Illinois, Florida and New Mexico training centers. Certification courses provide in-depth training that validate breast exam competencies while increasing clinician confidence and teaching skills.

MammaCare offers three certification courses to health professionals engaged in clinical practice or teaching. The courses are conducted individually with one or two trainees and are scheduled well in advance of travel to the campus training facility.  Continuing education contact hours are available and certification is valid for three years. The courses include: Certified MammaCare Clinical Breast Examiner, Certified MammaCare Specialist, and Certified MammaCare BSE Instructor.

Trainees begin their program online with a series of didactic and practical examination sessions that focus on baseline palpation skills in preparation for their arrival at the training site. Onsite, trainees learn standardized breast examination procedures and skills, first on tactually accurate MammaCare breast models and then on surrogate patients. Advanced simulation technology is used to measure and validate CBE competencies for reliably detecting small simulated breast lesions without increasing false positives. Exam thoroughness is validated with the MammaCare Proficiency Lamp.

Course materials include:

  • Professional Learning System (MLS-1)
  • Personal Learning System (MLS-2)
  • Skill Maintenance Breast Model
  • BSE/CBE Teaching Poster
  • Three-dimensional Breast Lump Size Displays

The MammaCare Method® of Clinical Breast Examination provides the tactile training needed to enhance sensitivity of clinician’s fingers and the ability to discriminate normal nodular breast tissue from suspicious breast lesions. The MammaCare Method® teaches palpation and search procedures designed to ensure that trained fingers contact every cubic millimeter of breast tissue. Practitioners learn to detect suspicious lesions as small as 3mm while minimizing or eliminating false positive detections.
