Support the Addiction Treatment Access Improvement Act of 2018

July 23, 2018

Senator Claire McCaskill's (D-Mo) office on July 12 released a report finding that over the last six years, enough opioids were shipped into the state of Missouri to give every resident 260 pills. While that is a snapshot of just one state, combine that news with the latest report and alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that the number of overdose deaths involving fentanyl and similar drugs nearly doubled between the last half of 2016 and the first half of 2017, and it becomes clear that the opioid crisis is still destroying the lives of individuals, families, and communities in epic proportions.

Ask your senators to follow the House's example and support legislation that would grant and extend nurses the ability to prescribe life-saving treatment for opioid addiction.

Join the Next Health Nurse Initiative: Celebrate Civility

July 12, 2108

Although we enter the nursing profession to care and advocate for others, nurses are often bullied by patients, visitors, co-workers, and others in the health care setting.

Consider these startling facts from ANA's Health Risk Appraisal:

  • Almost half of nurses have experienced aggression from a coworker at least once.
  • 39 percent of nurses have been the target of aggression by a superior.
  • More than 40 percent have been threatened by a patient or patient's family member.
  • One in four nurses has been physically assaulted by a patient or a patient's family member while at work.

Bullying, hostility, and violence can cause nurses to suffer physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Starting July 23, for 10 days, Healthy Nurse, Healthy NationTM will share new tips and strategies to help nurses overcome these issues and make lasting positive changes in the workplace. Join now!

Due August 17, 2018 ANA Seeks Public Comment on Updates to Principles of Staffing & Workforce Management

July 12, 2018

Since the original 1999 publication of ANA's Principles for Nurse Staffingstaffing issues facing the profession have reached multidimensional heights in complexity. ANA believes that the interaction where care is given—the encounter between a nurse and patient/health care consumer, family, or community—is where staffing concerns need to be addressed and solutions developed. The Principles document affords a framework to help all nurses address questions about appropriate staffing levels, provide measurable criteria to assess the sufficiency of staffing and skill mix, as well as criteria for evaluating workforce staffing systems.
Please use this opportunity to contribute to ANA's focus on transparency and recognition of the important insights of public examination of its products. Feel free to share this announcement with colleagues, students, health care consumers, and other stakeholders.
